Perevozskiy district

The whole history of the district is somehow connected with the river Piyana and the ferry, existed on it. The chronicles mention that people have begun to take up their residence on its banks in the middle of the 14th century. At that time Piyana has been the border of the Nizhni Novgorod-Suzdal dukedom.
The district is known because of Veldemanovo village where boy Nikita Minin has been born in 1605 - future reformer of the Russian Church, the seventh Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Nikon. Branch of Perevozskiy museum-exhibition centre “Nikitino podvorie”, dedicated to Nikon, works in the village at the present time.
The state complex nature reserve of regional importance ”Ichalkovskiy” with the area of 936 hectares is situated in the southern zone of the district, it is famous due to unique nature and karst caves. Here one can see numerous sinks, karst ravines and grots, holes with the depth of up to 30 meters. In total there are over one hundred karst sinks at the territory of this natural object, the caves have been generated in some of them.
Cool air of the coniferous forest contributes to preservation of marvellous flora and fauna.
One can get acquainted with a lot of peculiarities of Ichalkovskiy coniferous forest as well as with its inhabitants during the excursion at this monument of nature. The moment of becoming familiar with the grots and caves will be the most exciting one during this excursion-walking. One can go down to some of them, some of them have their own names: Bezymyannaya, Studencheskaya, Teplaya, Rozhdestvenskaya. The majority of caves have the shape of sack and entries are located at the distance of 5-6 meters above the bottom. The length of the caves is from 15 up to 25-27 meters. Teplaya cave has the highest arches - up to 15 meters. Some caves (Teplaya, Kholodnaya, Bezymyannaya) have small lakes and the lake at the bottom of Kholodnaya cave is covered with ice even in summer.
Urochishe Kamennoe is the monument of nature of the regional importance, it is located not far from Ichalki. Building stone has been extracted in the 19th century in this ravine. Name of the ravine has come from here. There are two types of bats, listed in Red Book of the Russian Federation, and other rare plants there.
