Vorotunskiy district

The district is located in the Eastern part of the Nizhni Novgorod Region.
River Volga divides Vorotunskiy district into two parts: left bank - with large forests, mainly pine woods and right bank - forest-steppe. The district is one of the most watery ones in the Region. Sura falls into Volga exactly here. Several picturesque lakes, including one of the largest lakes in the Nizhni Novgorod Region - Bolshoe Plotovo are located on the left bank of Volga.
Mordva and Mari people appear in the first millenium of CE in Prisurskiy district and after them the predecessors of contemporary Chuvashes. These lands have been under Volzhskaya Bulgaria reign in the 12th -13th centuries.
The independent Vorotynskiy district has been created in 1929. Settlement Vorotynets is the centre of the district.
Vorotynets has been one of the largest trading villages of the Nizhni Novgorod Governorate. There has been such a saying with good reason: “Vorotynets feeds everyone”, big bread bazars have been carried out here in winter. There have been a lot of merchants and craftsmen, all of them have had good houses that serve people even now.
Manor house of merchant of the 1st guild Ivan Stepanovich Ryabov, the main bread merchant, is of special interest. It is huge but it looks as an elegant casket thanks to the carved brick dorses with corbel arches. And it is easy and free to breathe in its cool rooms even when the temperature is thirty degrees above zero. One can see the real Russian palace in the house of merchants Yalovitsiny.
The first in Russia monument to the representative of glorious family of Russian commanders, statesmen - Mikhail Ivanovich Vorotynskiy, the first private owner of Vorotynskie lands, has been installed in Vorotynets.
There is the settlement Vasilsursk in the Vorotynskiy district, it has significantly contributed to strengthening of the Russian state, as the fortress, boundary with Kazan khanate, founded in 1523 by the duke Andrey Gorbatyi and named after the Grand Prince of Moscow Vasily III, who reined at that time. Vasilsursk is the significant place for Nizhni Novgorod. One can visit Orlinoe gnezdo here - M.Gorky’s favourite recreation place, Shishkin mull, where famous Russian painter I.I.Shishkin has written his sketches. The building, where the memorial tablet is set up, reminding about A.S. Pushkin’s visit to Vasilsursk, is interesting for tourists. And visiting Kazan church (1708) in sloboda Khmelevka - the most ancient temple at the territory of Vorotynskiy district, chapel at the place of the destroyed temple of Smolensky Icon of the Mother of God will enrich spiritually.
A lot of landlord bartons and dachas have been located at the territory of Vorotynskiy district in the pre-revolutionary time. Manors of the nobility have been well-designed and they fit in the landscape well. Five manors are located on the left bank of the river Urga: in the village Pokrov-Maidan, in the village Bykovka and settlement Krasnaya Gorka.
Pokrov-Maidan and Bykovka is the ancestral land of famous Demidovy family. There is a church, built in the 19th century, in Pokrov-Maidan, near the former manor. It is being restored nowadays. The estate of duke Platon Sergeevich Obolenskiy-Neledinskiy-Meletskiy is located in the settlement Krasnaya Gorka. It is tumble-down house - castle in imitation Gothic style and the park today.
Vorotynskiy district is wonderful: medieval Vasilsursk, sinking in gardens, and lilac capital of the district - Bykovka, orthodox temples, merchant and peasant houses of the 18th - beginning of the 20th century, shy Sura and magnificent Volga. Russians, Mari people, Tatars and Chuvashes - people, carefully preserving centenary cultural traditions live here side by side long since.
